Leaving Nairobi, fly by scheduled service to Nanyuki, on the slopes of Mt Kenya. Here you will be collected by vehicle and driven to Rocky Hollow, a 2-hour trip.
Rocky Hollow is a large house that we use as a base for our riding trips, with plenty of
rooms and space, and spectacular views. Arrive in time for lunch, and then in the afternoon, we will go for a short ride to try out the horses.
We want to make sure you are as comfortable with your ride.
Overnight at rocky hollow.
In the morning, we will ride to Chololo Ranch, a lovely conservancy to our south, where a mobile camp will have been set up under an enormous Kopje. The ride is about 4 hours, and we will pass through some lovely game country with a chance of seeing elephants, zebra, giraffe, and plenty of gazelle, including impala, gerenuk, oryx, and Grants. There are some buffalo here as well, and we quite often see cats here.
The camp is very comfortable, the tents have two beds in each or a double bed, depending on your choice, your own loo and shower tent are right behind and in easy reach. Our mess tent will be set up under a tree for shade and the fully staffed kitchen not to far away. The horses sleep on a picket line and will be right in front of camp so we can keep an eye on them overnight.
A sundowner on top of the Kopje will give us the most enormous views.
Overnight: Enjoy a night under the stars at a fully equipped mobile tented camp on Chololo Ranch
After a large breakfast in camp, we will set off. Riding southeast today, we will ride along the Ewaso Ngiro River, watching out for bathing elephants on the way. Moving away from the river, we will head north to Tumeran conservancy, which is well known for its large herds of oryx, as well as all the other plains game.
We will have a picnic lunch on the way today, carried in our saddle bags, and arrive in camp in time for tea in camp which will have been moved to this new location on the edge of the river. Sundowners under the stars with a delicious dinner.
Once again, the horses are picketed close to us and the camp crew, and we will keep an eye on them.
We will set off back to Rocky Hollow this morning, with slightly rockier terrain and plenty of wildlife to see on the way, arriving in time for a late lunch.
In the afternoon, a visit to the habituated baboon troop that has been studied for the last 30 years, with the extremely knowledgeable guides to explain their habits, social structure, and movements.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi, enjoying one last glimpse of Laikipia’s breathtaking landscapes as you conclude your safari.
